One of our school priorities this year has been to increase the usage of our school library so that more children can enjoy the pleasure of reading. To help us achieve this we have improved the way the library is organised, created a ‘New Books’ display area and invested in new books, many of which have been chosen by the children. To improve our library further, we would like to purchase even more new books linked to our topics and the children’s interests; however, this is proving difficult with our very tight school budget. This is where you can help us and it won’t cost you a penny! We want to win the school competition run by National Book Tokens to receive £5000 worth of book tokens to spend on new books for our library. This is a free competition which you can enter at:

All the stuff we've done!

Firstly, hello! My name is Mr Hedger and I'm teaching all your wonderful, amazing and brilliant children until the Summer! So far, I've had an absolutely wonderful time. All your children are fantastic and I'm really, really looking forward to all the exciting learning we have planned.

We've already done so much already so I thought I'd update this blog with as much as I can!

Did you hear that a yellow alien crashed on the playground? We found loads of missing spaceship parts which was exciting and we made lots of 'Missing' posters so that we could find her. We learnt that the alien was called Beegu and heard a lovely story about how she came to earth long ago and made friends with some very caring children, just like the children in Elm Class. We made some super transport for Beegu so that she can find her missing spaceship part.

More recently, a very strange thing happened over half term and a toy train magically appeared in the classroom. We saw on Mr Hedger's camera that a zebra, an elephant and a lion all went on the train. Now, every single day, the train and all the animals move around the classroom! How strange! We wrote letters to My Yuill telling him about what is happening and they all look fantastic and are packed full of information. We then started learning about a book called 'Oi! Get off our Train!'

And finally, we have been learning all about some famous people from long ago. We enjoyed learning about the Wright brothers and made our own paper airplanes which we tested, evaluated and improved. Some of them went really, really far! We also started learning about Neil Armstrong and made some super spaceship artwork and are now learning about Africa. We created some super African artwork as well! Take a look:

We have done so much more besides this but there is simply too much to remember!

Thanks you for reading. Come back soon!

Dartmoor Zoo

This term our topic is 'Amazing Animals' and we will be reading books and writing about animals as well as learning about animals and humans in Science. We went to Dartmoor zoo to meet and learn more about animals. We went to the meerkat talk and met Sonny's cousins and then had a workshop where we learnt more about what makes an animal a mammal, reptile, bird or a fish. We were given a animal picture and we had to sort them into the right group.

After that, we met and touched a snake, a lizard and a tortoise. They were very friendly!
After lunch, we had a little play in the playground and pretended to be jackals and meerkats running away from them.
Then we had plenty of time to walk around the zoo to met lots of different types of animals. Have a look to see how much fun we had!

European Day of Languages

Wednesday 26th September was European Day of Languages.

Elm class celebrated by learning how to say hello and goodbye in different languages and discussing why it is important to learn new languages.

We then coloured in flags from around Europe. Have a look at our flags!

Science

We have been learning about our bodies in science. The children had the task of drawing around one of them and in groups they had to try and name as many body parts as they could. We then talked about the 5 senses and which body parts we use.

Maths

We have been having lots of fun over the last couple of weeks. We have been learning to count, read, write and order numbers as well as add and subtract single digits. We have been using bricks, counters, number lines, Numicon and tens frames to help us.  We also have been working hard to work together to solve problems. Have a look to see how much fun we have been having whilst learning!
